About Us

Hello! We are Kevin & Tina DeKam.

We met as 18-year-old Freshmen at Hope College in 1995 and the rest as they say, was history! We got married in 2000, a year out of college, and have been living a life of adventure ever since! We have always been a family who loves to travel and enjoys anything outdoors…from kayaking to hiking to mountain-biking, we are always up for a challenge!

Kevin is a “jack of all trades. He always wondered why God made him the way he did…a farm boy at heart,  yet loves the big city and diversity . A “people-person” who has a heart for listening and helping, while also standing up for what he believes in with passion.  Kevin started out of college working as a direct care counselor at a Children’s Home. While at this organization he graduated to work in foster care, and then was the director of the emergency shelter there for these abused and neglected children. He left there after 10 years to go into private practice doing professional counseling with individuals and families. He also dabbles in politics as a township supervisor, and enjoys a rental property business where he can “get his hands dirty” working on fixer-uppers.

Tina has always been a creative person. So her first job in insurance as a customer service representative, while giving her invaluable experience, wasn’t quite her dream job. She was able to go back to school and pursue her dream of becoming a graphic designer. Soon after attaining her computer skills she got a job with GEMS Girls’ Clubs as the graphic designer. She worked there for 8 1/2 years designing promotional materials, curriculm, packaging, and their monthly subscription magazine. In the past year, she felt God nudging her to go out on her own (also, another dream) to allow for more flexiiblity for her family. She and two of her friends opened elah design group, a graphic and web design agency which is going great!

As you can see, when God was calling us to leave our homes and our jobs, which we felt we had worked so hard for, we couldn’t understand! We were so “comfortable”! But we quickly learned that God doesn’t want us to be “comfortable”. He had/has plans for us that we could never imagine, and we are so excited to begin this next chapter of our lives!

We also have three rambunctious, adorable, loving boys.

Clayton (a.k.a. Clay-tones) is 7 years old and is our little learner. He loves to read and is a math whiz! (He taught himself division one morning from a book, while we were all still sleeping)! He loves to play sports, and especially following the NFL. He could probably tell you any team, when they played each other, and the score.

Rowan (a.k.a Rody-monster) is 5 and is so full of life, laughter, and energy! He is like the energizer bunny. He is a very inquisitive little guy and really surprises you by the things he picks up when you think they have gone right over his head. He is a natural athlete, and is always trying to keep up with his older brother. He also is very affectionate and sensitve. He will be the first to bear-hug you in the morning and the last to kiss you good-night.

Hudson (a.ka. Hootie) is 2 1/2 and is a typical third child. We sometimes forget he is around he is so low-key. He is our only red head in the family and we still don’t know where he got it from! He LOVES his big brothers and will follow them around all day long. He too is very affectionate and unlike his big brothers will sit and snuggle with you for hours!

Our boys are very excited for this big adventure. While Clayton is really the only one who “gets it” the others say their prayers for Zambia and us moving there every night. Clayton is ready to go TODAY! He has always had a passion for learning about different parts of the world and studies his globe day and night. He is excited about meeting the people there, and teaching the children english, how to read, and about his maps!

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about our family. We are excited to share more as God takes us on this amazing journey!
